Larchmont Classic Boat Regatta

It only got better as the racing began. The Race Committee of Larchmont Yacht Club expertly ran the Regatta – the fleet sailed two races in 15 knots of sparkling westerly breeze and sunshine-superb sailing enjoyed by the crews as well as spectators on a vast assortment of craft watching the excitement just off of Larchmont Harbor. The yachts returned to their moorings and retired to the lawn of the LYC for refreshment and sea stories just as the crews of many of these very same yachts had done 40, 50 and 60 years ago.

A homecoming in the finest sense of the word – a historical return to homeports for the likes of Nautilus and Salty and others, and a spiritual return to Larchmont-one of the great centers of yachting in the U.S. and the world for over 100 years and again on that weekend in July, the homeport for a fleet of beloved and beautiful classic yachts of yesteryear.

Many at the ensuing party and prize-giving, as well as the dockside raft-up on Sunday, were heard wondering aloud as to what had happened to yacht design and why there were not more of these classic beauties gracing harbors, tearing up race courses, and giving comfort to their crews at days' end. More than one of these "wonderers" will be gracing Larchmont Harbor in July of 2004 in their own classics-some newer, some older-but all anxious to celebrate with like minded souls and similar craft-and of course, there are some sea stories to be made on the race course as well...
